Note from the Composer: This was
my re-score for the producers of the movie and was not part of the
commercial release of the film where the first score was used.
I'm not sure if you know the full story but in very simple terms the
director chose his composers to score the film and fiercely stood by
this score. I was commissioned by the producers to write a new
score which they attempted to make final but after Tsotsi starting
winning awards with the original music there was no way my score was
going to have a chance, especially without the directors support. In
fact he never heard my score.
Commentary: Short unused
score for TSOTSI combines 4 elements. The basement of the score
lays on numerous ethnic percussions and flutes that are
combined with electronic programing, string orchestra and solo
voice performed by Nicola Emmanuelle. Some of the cues included on
this rare promotional edition (Dube Heist) are based
exclusively on various percussive instruments reminding its
listeners some of more avantgard writting heard in WAKE OF DEATH.
TSOTSI remains to be one of the hidden gems of Guy Farley's
discography providing variable listening experience ranging from
elegiatic variations of the main theme to more off-beat writing
incorporating electronic programming.
Plot
Summary: In Johannesburg, the small time criminal Tsotsi is
a teenager without feelings, hardened by his tough life. After
killing a man with his gang in a robbery; hitting the gangster
Boston of his gang; humiliating a crippled beggar along one night,
Tsotsi hijacks a car and under the despair of a woman, he shoots her
in the stomach. While driving the car, Tsotsi finds that there is a
baby on the back seat and the woman was a desperate mother. He
brings the baby to his house in the slum and becomes attached to
him. For six days, the baby changes his behavior, arousing and
developing the sense of empathy and humanity in the cold blood
killer.
